In 1879, the property was transformed into a summer residence by the architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White, who designed the original structure. The mansion was later expanded in 1900, adopting a Tudor Revival style characterized by its brick and limestone construction and distinctive conical tower.

The estate has hosted renowned artists, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who recorded in the ballroom, and musician Billy Joel, who praised the property’s views and played the piano in the ballroom.
